The Cathedral Church in Belgrade, in the street of Prince Sime Markovic, was built on the foundations of the old church, which was mentioned during the Austrian rule of Belgrade from 1717 to 1739. The old church, which was built of stone, with a large cube, without a cross, was so destroyed after the surrender of Belgrade in 1739, that in 1763 it had to be demolished. In its place, a new wooden church was built, which in 1795 replaced a church of solid material, but without a bell tower. The bell rang for the first time in Belgrade under Turkey, February 16, 1830, and it was brought from Srem village of Jakov.
Today's Assembly Church was built for nine years, from April 28, 1837 to November 8, 1845, by the conduct of Prince Miloš Obrenović. It is dedicated to the archangel Michael, the supreme glory of Prince Milos, who gave the church the building as its endowment. The church was designed by Franc Janke by the name of the Serbian church in Sremski Karlovci, in the style of classicism with elements of the late Baroque. The design solution was given by baron Kordon, and the church was built by Pancevo and Zemun masters.
The interior of the temple is richly decorated. Dimensional gold-plated iconostasis was made by sculptor Dimitrije Petrovic, and icons on iconostasis, singers, thrones and predicates, as well as compositions on walls and vaults, was painted by Dimitrije Avramovic, one of the most prominent Serbian painter of the 19th century. A special treasure is the church treasury. In the church there are the relics of the holy Emperor Uros and the holy despot Stefan Stiljanovic, as well as the tombs of church leaders and Serbian rulers from the Obrenovic dynasty (Milos, Mihail and Milan). In front of the main portal, two great men of Serbian culture were buried: Dositej Obradovic and Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic.
