The Museum of Theater Art of Serbia is a cultural institution of
national significance that has existed since 1950 and is financed from
the budget of the Ministry of Culture of RS. We are located in Christmas house, a building dating back to 1836 by
pig merchant Miloje Bozic and which is in itself a cultural monument,
located in Gospodar Jevremova street 19 in Belgrade. The Museum keeps theatrical materials that testify to the development of the theater in Serbia since the 13th century. The museum fund consists of objects relevant to scientific research or
amateur studies of classical drama, opera and ballet art as well as new
multimedia scenic forms. We
strive to collect, process, preserve and display as many elements as
possible for the reconstruction of a past theater act: from the
manuscript of the drama, through directorial books and notes, propaganda
material printed with performances, to photographs, audio and video
recordings of performances, criticism and other prints from the press, testimonies of the performers, their contemporaries or later researchers. In addition to materials related to institutions, we also collect
material important for professional biographies of theater producers,
but also testimonials about the private life of artists. Valuable correspondence, photos, school certificates and numerous
personal items help us to complete the picture of certain epochs, that
is, about the institutions and people who lived and worked in them. The museum's fund is systematized according to the type of material on
the collections: Archival material and documentation, Letters,
Manuscripts, Posters and programs, Photographs, Audio and video, Art and
memorable objects, Scenographic and costume designs, Heritage, Library
and Hemeroteka. Within
the website of the Museum, users are available Teatroslov, online
theatrographic database with accompanying digital collections formed on
the basis of material stored in museum collections, but also in
theaters, in private collections. Teatroslov also includes online permanent exhibition of the Museum, as
well as electronic versions of traditional museum exhibitions. We have barely 250 m2 used as offices, for the storage of materials,
and as an exhibition space that simultaneously serves for the conduct of
all other program activities (promotions, stands, lectures, screenings,
concerts ...). In addition to the exhibition, the Museum has a rich publishing business. Independently,
or in cooperation with another publisher, more than two hundred titles
have been published, and the magazine "Teatron" has been published for
three decades in the edition of the Museum.
