The Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade collects, preserves,
studies, publishes and exhibits Yugoslav and Serbian art from 1900 until
today. The activity of the Museum of Contemporary Art started in 1958, when
the Act of the Union for Culture of the National Committee of the City
of Belgrade passed the Decision on the establishment of the Modern
Gallery, an institution whose task was to follow the development of the
Yugoslav and Serbian modern and contemporary art of the 20th century. The
founder and first director of the Moderna galerija, which started
working in 1959, later the Museum of Contemporary Art, was Miodrag B.
Protić, a painter, theoretician and art critic. In
the same year, the Executive Council of the Republic of Serbia decided
to build a building for the needs of the Modern Gallery that would
satisfy modern museological principles and determine the location in New
Belgrade, at the confluence of the Sava, opposite the Belgrade
Fortress. At the same time, a competition for the design of the design was announced. The competition was completed in 1960 and the selected authors were arch. Ivan Antić (1923-2006) and arch. Ivanka Raspopovic (1930-2015). The
building of the Museum of Contemporary Art was built from 1960 to 1965.
Cultural property - a cultural monument was established in 1987.
