Ethnographic Museum is one of the oldest museums on the Balkan peninsula. He recently celebrated one hundred years of existence. He can rightly be called the guardian of the immense treasure of traditional culture.
The Ethnographic Museum was founded in February 1901, but its roots go deeper into the past. The collection of ethnographic objects began in the mid-nineteenth century. Within the National Museum of Serbia (Serbian Museum of Natural History), as early as 1844, there were a number of ethnographic objects.
The first significant systematic collection was done to participate at the Svesloven exhibition, held in Moscow in 1867. In spite of the fact that all the collected items remained in Moscow at that time, this exhibition is important because the systematic collection of ethnographic objects and the ethnological study of this area have begun in Serbia and in the Balkans in general.
