The National Museum in Belgrade was founded in 1844 and is the oldest museum institution in Serbia. It is located in the central core of Belgrade in the area between the Republic Square and the streets of Čika Ljubine, on a square plot that relies on its front side to the Republic Square, the former Theater Square.
Within the National Museum are the Fresco Gallery, the Vuk and Dosite Museum and the Memorial Museum of Nadezhda and Rastko Petrović. The greatest value kept in the National Museum is the Miroslav Gospel - the oldest and most valuable Cyrillic manuscript, created around 1190.
